What Is Poly-B (Polybutylene) Plumbing?

Polybutylene — commonly called Poly-B — is a grey flexible plastic pipe that was used for residential water supply lines across Canada from approximately 1978 to 1995. It was popular because it was inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to install compared to copper. At its peak it was used in hundreds of thousands of Canadian homes.

Poly-B has since been discontinued as a plumbing material. Long-term performance studies and field experience showed that the pipe becomes brittle and prone to failure — particularly at fittings — as it ages and is exposed to chlorinated municipal water and ultraviolet light.

When Was Poly-B Installed in BC Homes?

If your home was built between 1978 and 1995, there is a meaningful chance it has Poly-B plumbing. In the Lower Mainland and Tri-Cities, this covers a substantial portion of the housing stock — particularly in areas that saw significant residential construction during the 1980s and early 1990s.

  • Colour: Poly-B is grey. It may also appear white or very pale blue in some product variants, but grey is most common
  • Stamping: Look for the code "PB2110" printed along the length of the pipe
  • Flexibility: Poly-B is flexible plastic — it bends rather than holding a rigid shape like copper
  • Fittings: Poly-B fittings are typically grey or white plastic (acetal) or copper with a distinctive crimp or insert connection

Do not confuse Poly-B with PEX. PEX is a modern flexible pipe used for new construction and replacement — it is typically red, blue, or white and is a safe, code-approved material. Grey flexible plastic from the 1980s or early 1990s is almost certainly Poly-B.

Chlorine Degradation

What Poly-B Replacement Involves

  • Slightly more expensive than PEX in most installations
  • Preferred in some older homes where rigidity is an advantage

PEX

  • Flexible — easier to route through walls and around obstacles with fewer fittings
  • Resistant to freeze-burst damage better than copper
  • Generally lower material and labour cost
  • Colour-coded (red for hot, blue for cold) which simplifies future service
  • Now the most common replacement choice in the Lower Mainland
